Hair Biology: What must I know?

Understanding basic hair anatomy as well as hair growth cycles is vital, in order to plan a successful treatment regimen. For instance, hair grows in 3 stages:

1. Anagen – the active growth phase
2. Catagen – the dormant hair stage
3. Telogen – the resting stage

Follicles are most responsive to treatment during the Anagen phase, prompting the need for additional treatments to achieve satisfactory clearance.

What is a realistic expectation?

Permanent hair reduction is achieved when a follicle is thermally destroyed and not able to grow a terminal hair again. Because many millions of follicles grow on the body, it is highly unlikely that every single follicle in the treated area will be disabled. Over several treatments, most of the follicles that cycle through hair growth will be affected, critically injured, and/or permanently disabled. Follicles that are dormant or vellus hairs are not affected during these treatments.

It is very important to remember that the body can convert these inactive or dormant follicles to grow later in life as a result of factors including hormonal imbalance, pregnancy, menopause, disease, medications, obesity or idiopathic causes. Since there is a gradual and cumulative reduction with each treatment session, the hair density should decrease. In summary: During the course of treatments, less hair grows back due to a gradual and cumulative reduction. As hairs grow back between treatments, it will be less, finer, lighter, and slower growing.

How frequently do I come?

Hair growth is reduced after each treatment as the number and frequency of treatments required will be based on hair color, hair type, body area, skin tone, and other hair growth variables. A customized treatment plan is created especially for you during your Professional Consultation!

Does this treatment hurt?

The sensation is often described as a snapping feeling that lasts for only a fraction of a second. You may feel warmth or a tingling sensation for a short time afterward. Most people tolerate treatment without any topical anesthetic. In addition, our lasers offer chilled handpieces combined with an additional state of the art cryo-cooling system for ultimate comfort!

How should I prepare?

Sun avoidance and sun protection will reduce the risk of dyschromia (hyper or hypopigmentation) and epidermal effects. Light to moderately tanned skin can generally be treated within the appropriate parameters. Patients should refrain from applying topical medications or irritating agents to the skin for 1-2 days prior to treatment. Skin should be clean with no lotion, perfume, make up or sunscreen the day of. Refrain from waxing and tweezing at least 4 weeks prior to treatment and allow 2 weeks post filler and injectable.

What Happens After Treatment?

You may observe a temporary pinkness on the skin surface that is temporary. Most people return to work or normal activity immediately after treatment. The treated area will “shed” some hairs over the next 2-4 weeks and many guests experience a period of hairlessness in the treated area while waiting for the next session. After treatment, be sure to avoid the sun and apply sunscreen to treated area for at least 3 days after treatment. Avoid irritation from chemical or mechanical stimulation for at least 2 days post treatment, as direct or indirect heat should be avoided for at least 2 days after treatment.

Hirsutism, excessive, or stubborn hair: Can this be treated?

Hirsutism is an excessive growth of terminal hairs with masculine characteristics that typically results from increased androgenic levels while Hypertrochosis involves a generalized excessive hair growth pattern that stems from genetic disposition or is medication related. Hypertrichosis and Hirsutism may be treated, but often will require additional treatments with less predicted response do to these variables. In addition, stubborn hair that is commonly found on men’s backs, chest and facial hair may also require additional treatments.
